Growing Information
Upon Arrival:
It is very important to plant as soon as possible after you receive them. If it is necessary to store them for a short time before planting them, open the plastic bags. If the roots appear dry, soak them for a few hours in warm water. Store in slightly moist peat moss in a cold, but not freezing location until you can plant. They can also be placed in pots of soil if planting will be delayed for more than 2 weeks. Use any peat-based potting soil and pots with drainage holes.
Soak bare-root perennials in water for a few hours before planting. Unless otherwise specified, bare-root perennials are usually planted with the crown (where the shoots meet the roots) an inch below the soil surface. Firm soil gently to eliminate air pockets and water in well. Mark the area clearly since it may be a while before the plant shows itself.
Planting Butterfly Flower: Plant 15"-18" apart with the top of the tap root about 1/2" to 1" below soil level and digging deep enough to plant the carrot-like root vertically without coiling or breaking the roots. Mix a couple teaspoons of bone meal into the planting hole if desired. Grows best in full sun, in sandy, well drained, soil. May be difficult to move without damaging the root system if they have been planted for a long time. If necessary transplant only when dormant or propagate by seed.
Planting Liatris: Plant the corms 1" deep and 6"-8" apart. Plant liatris in full sun and in very well-drained soil. It will tolerate even poor soil and summer droughts.
Planting Geranium: Space 18-24" apart, with the growing tips just under the soil surface. Hardy Geraniums can take some shade but are best when they receive sun for most of the day. Plant in ordinary, well-drained soil, in full sun to partial shade. In hotter areas, plant in partial shade. Divide in spring or fall when necessary. Grows 12-24" tall, spreading 18-36", depending on variety.
Planting Columbine: Plant 12-18 inches apart, with crowns at soil level in well-drained, moist soil. Prefers part shade, especially if summers are hot. Deadhead regularly and water during dry periods. Usually grows 2-3 feet tall.
Planting False Sunflower: Plant in full sun to part sun in loamy to humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. They need good soil and regular moisture for best performance. The crowns and roots should also never be exposed as this can cause the growth tips to dry out which can stunt or prevent new growth. Plant with the top of the crown about 1 to 2" below the soil so that the crown and roots are completely covered. Space 18-24" apart. Mulch about 1" deep after planting.
