Orion Fennel
Florence vulgare azoricum. Fennel is most often used for its crisp sweet licorice flavoured bulb, but the fonds are used for garnish, and stalks are great in a broth. Delicious chopped and served raw with some olive oil, steamed with butter or added to your stir-fry. The seed is also used in baking. This hybrid matures in 80-85 days. Approx. 50 seeds/pkg.

Growing Information
Planting:
Direct seed fennel mid-spring through late summer or start transplants 4-5 weeks before planting date. Plant outdoors after danger of hard frost has passed. Bolting can result from disturbing the roots. Sow seeds directly into the garden about 1⁄4-1/2 inch deep about 6 to 12 inches apart. Prefers well drained soil and full sun.
Growing:
Heavy clay soils will hinder seed growth. The beds should be kept moist for 2 weeks or until the first leaves appear. Take care then not to overwater.
Harvesting:
Harvest bulbs at 3-4” in diameter.
Pests:
Aphids, whitefly and lepidopterous larvae can be controlled by floating row cover in areas where they are a problem.
