Growing Information
Planting:
Start indoors 12-14 weeks before your last frost. Sow seeds 0.25-0.5" deep and cover. Use of a heat mat or dome is only recommended if the area is drafty or is consistently below 18°c. Use of both dome and heat mat is not recommended at the same time. Provide light for at least 10 hours a day. Up-potting will be required once roots grow through bottom of pot/tray. Keep soil moist until germination. After germination, let soil dry slightly between watering - do not let soil dry out hard at any point.
Growing:
Harden off plants one week before your last frost over 3-5 days, in the shade if sunny. If temperatures are forecasted below 12°c, keep inside until they rise. Do not let plants dry out hard if in pots or containers. Dianthus planted directly in the garden only need water during times of establishment or drought. Feed with a water-soluble flower fertilizer once month or make two applications of granular perennial food, once in early summer, once more at flowering. Granular feeding should be at least 1 month apart. Flowers for cutting are best from plants grown in full sun.
