Tavor Organic Artichoke
No cooling period required! Artichokes are usually perennial plants in the mediterranean, requiring the mild winters to produce harvestable buds, but Tavor has been bred to produce multiple buds during the first year of growth. When started early indoors, they will produce 6-7 firm, tight buds. This variety has been proven to yield early and grow successfully in Northern latitudes. Matures in 90-95 days. Approx. 20 seeds/pkg.

Growing Information
Planting:
Start indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost. Sow 1 seed 1/4" deep in a 3.5" cell or pot. Germination occurs 10-21 days after sowing with a soil temperature of 21-26°c. Use of a heat mat and dome/cloche can help retain moisture and keep temperatures high. Keep soil moist but not wet until germination occurs. Once germinated, discontinue use of heat mat and dome/cloche, and let soil dry slightly between waters but not to the point of wilt. Start fertilizing at the 1st-2nd true leaf stage. Use a water-soluble fertilizer high in phosphorus, like 10-52-10, to help promote a healthy root system.
Growing:
Harden off outside, 5-7 days, after threat of frost has passed. Plant in a full sun location. Space plants 3’ apart in rows 5-6’ apart. pH of 6.0 to 7.0 is desired. Rich soil with lots of organic matter and regular fertilization are required for maximum yield.
Harvesting:
Harvest artichoke flower buds just before the scales begin to open.
Pests and Diseases:
Artichokes are relatively pest free.
Note:
Most artichokes need a vernalization period (a certain number of hours at cool temperatures that initiates flower buds during the growing season) to produce buds. Tavor F1 has been bred to not need this step.
